Gibran Studio
I began working with clay in 1997.
Being a maker in the ceramic field offers me the space to create both functional and sculptural work. Moving between these allows me to shift my mindset between methodical and explorative, which lends to a dynamic studio practice.

INSPIRATION
I am a slow walker. I amble along the shore at the beach, I wander through our neighborhood. As I stroll, I pick up sticks, shells, and rocks. I take pictures of what I can't carry. In the garden, there are endless sources of interest. Unopened flower buds, seed pods, and tiny fungi pull my attention. I am looking for textures and relationships between forms.
Piles of sketchbooks are revisited and old concepts are reworked. I enjoy this slow method of developing new work because I am able to blend ideas from my early years in clay with the new. This helps me to continue to move forward without losing my thread.

PROCESS
My work is created using a mid range porcelain. I love the texture, brightness, and translucency of the material. I also love how it challenges me to be a better craftsman as I work to accentuate its translucent qualities.

My process doesn't begin with clay. Instead, I start by creating a linoleum cut with a repeating pattern or texture. Each piece is 12" x 18" and can take between 15 and 40 hours to complete, depending on the complexity of the pattern. The lino cuts then are used in my studio to add texture to thin slabs of clay.
